Legal Question in Workers Comp in California

I've been a freelance writer for seven years, working with many Silicon Valley companies. A company wants to interview me for a contract-to-hire position. They say I need to provide proof of workers compensation insurance to be considered for the position. I've never heard of such a thing. According to what I can find, I don't need workers comp because I'm a sole proprietor. What's going on?

Ask them why they want it and are they mistaking you for a contractor who has employees. I think you not only do not need WC insurance [is to protect employees] but you can not buy it in your position.
