Is a homeowner responsible for a licensed painer that has no insurance except Kaiser?

If you hired him as an independent contractor [flat fee, he can decide what hours he works and how he does the job, you can not fire him but only say the contract has been breached by him so you do not have to fulfill your part of the contract] then you have no responsibility for any injury he suffers unless it was because of your negligence.
