Legal Question in Criminal Law in Canada

Recently, a friend of mine at his work place switched boxes of a high priced item with a much lower priced one in the back room and sold it to a friend. Today he found out a hidden camera had been installed and they would be arresting people from his department. The price of the item is under $500, but he has a previous offence (petty theft, I think) that was dropped. He lives in Ontario Canada. What would the charges most likely be? would there be jail time? Any help appreciated

The charge would typically be a fraud allegation of what is commonly called 'false pretences.' Since this appears to be an employment fraud, that is an aggravating circumstance. With a prior record, jail cannot be ruled out. He should contact a criminal lawyer in his area.
