my son is being charged with assault
should he get a lawyer he says he did not assault anyone. or just plead guilty?

Assault is a criminal offence. For any criminal offence that you claim to be innocent of, you should consult a criminal lawyer. Assault is a serious enough charge that you should consult a lawyer irrespective of whether you think you are guilty or not.
