what happens at pre trial and what do I have to do?

What should I expect to happen?

If by "pretrial" you mean pretrial conference, it is a time for you to get a plea offer from the prosecution. You should already have discovery in hand. As for a public defender, you should have already asked for one at your first appearance. If you did not, do not wait for that date. Apply for a public defender immediately. Do this through your local Office of the Public Defender.
