Legal Question in Family Law in Colorado

marry and loose everything

I am disabled and have 2 homes, one for income, a small car, and a modest motorhome. I receive Social Security and Medicare. I would like to marry my friend but he too is disabled and if we marry I can loose everything but my one home and my car and I am not sure what else I would loose. He gets SSI and I know my income would drop to nearly nothing and I have perscriptions to pay for too. Is there some kind of agreement that would separate our assets where SSI is concerned or are we forced to just stay friends.

Re: marry and loose everything

I am not familiar with the workings of SSI. If you have done your research and it has revealed that by getting married you will lose your benefits, then getting married is a decision only you can make. However, with respect to your other assets, you and your significant other can have a premarital agreement drafted that would address how your items of real and personal property shall be treated in the event you divorce. I hope you find this to be helpful. Should you wish to discuss this further, I would be more than happy to schedule a consultation. I can be reached at (303) 299-9484.
