Legal Question in Immigration Law in Colorado

Working illegaly

I came to USA Colorado in 2002 with a H2B visa valid for 6mths so was my I-94 after the work season was over, I applied for an extension I-539 as a tourist which was approved for 90 days. I overstayed since I didn't have enough saved up to go back to Africa. I have been here for 7yrs now working as a citizen for a Bank and filling my taxes for thoes 7yrs. I fell in love with my husband who is a US citizen and we have a Son together. I tried to file for my adjustment of status but My lawyer said that I have to qwit my jos to do so thats because i lied on my I-9 that i was a citizen and i altered my SSN by rubbing the {Valid for work with INS autherization} off and that i have to wait a year before i can file. I had to work to support my family since my husband was a fulltime student and they didn't pay him a dime for his internship and i can't qwit my job since he is still looking for a job after his graduation. My question is if there is anything i can do with my status without having to qwit my job. We both have never been convicted of any felony we are clean. Ple.....ase Help...!
