Legal Question in Criminal Law in Connecticut

Confused on Process &

My brother is arrested for attemp murder ,1rst degree agrav assault & reck end 250,000 bond*(he says self defense a man beat him up & threatened him so he shot him in foot.(in bar both drinking) He has court date nxt week & no lawyer . Some have told me they will lower bond & might drop a attemp murder charge. A lawyer friend said he could go to court that day but if we want to hire him needs retainer fee. FAmily doesnt have that much money - do lawyers do pymt arrangements? or should he just ask for a public defender? need advice

You need an attorney.The first Court appearance usually involves setting of bond.The charges are extremely serious and carry the possibility of lengthy incarceration.Also,rarely are charges of such a serious nature reduced at the early stages of the process;and the eventual outcome is impossible to predict without more knowledge of the facts of the case.Lawyers do make arrangements in some cases;but expect to pay at least half up-front.
