I would like to know the cost of a divorce? Married 1986, not living together since 1994. Talking 3-4 times in 14 yrs. I'm concerned about debts he has accrued over the years. He lives in another state. He recently left me a message. He's ill, having surgery and doesn't know his prognosis. I want to protect myself. I own no property but I do have a small 401K. I live paycheck to paycheck alone. Can he take what little I have after 14yrs apart? Based on past experience, he's never had a job for any length of time due to his drug use. He's lived with his mother for the past 14yrs and he's 46yrs old. He'll try anything for a free ride.

He may be entitled to something as you were married for a good length of time. However, if you aren't going to agree to a distribution of property, then he would have to put up a fight for the property.
