Legal Question in Family Law in Connecticut

My rights after I'm 18

How do I exercise my rights after I'm 18 to move out of my house? Are my parents financially obligated in any way if the reasons for my moving out are emotional stress at home? If I have a car but I didn't pay for it am I allowed to take it or are my parents sued for it? also, if I was awarded money from a lawsuit that resulted from an accident when I was 13 but the money was given for my parents to hold on to until I was 18, now that I'm 18, how do I claim that money? Thanks.

I do not believe that your parents are required to support you beyond the age of 18 unless there is a court order to do so. (example: if your parents divorced and there is a judgment requiring them to support you.)

Whose name is on the title to the car? Is there a loan on the car? Whose name is on the loan?

If the car is in your name then you can keep the car, however, you will need to insure it yourself. Who is paying for the insurance? If their names are on the loan, then the loan company has the title and the title is most likely in their names. If the car is all paid for, it will depend on whose name the title is in.

With regard to the accident settlement, did a probate court order that the monies be placed in trust for you? If so, you can go to the probate court where you live and file an application with the probate judge to release the money. You should go to the probate court and speak to the clerk. He/she may be able to direct you.

If the settlement was placed in trust without probate court intervention, then you need to go to the bank where the money is and see if they can assist you in the procedure to withdraw the monies.

These are only some ideas in answer to your questions. Without knowing more it is difficult to advise.

The best answer to all of your questions is to see a lawyer.
