Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Connecticut

Hello,

I live in Connecticut. I purchased my childhood home which my parents owned for over 37 years. I have owned it now for over 5 years.. the question I have is we have been maintaining a section of the towns property about .02 acre which they{town} have abandened and not taking care of the property since I was a child. To this date I still maintain it and moved my fence out to that part that I maintained.. My question is isnt there a law when someone maintains anothers property for so many years it becomes that persons possession? This is what I am now facing with the town. Would love to hear your professional opinion on this matter..

Thank You,

The Perrys

You are referring to what is called adverse possession. There are certain criteria that must be met to obtain property by adverse possession. You should consult with an attorney who can apply the criteria to your particular facts in order to render an opinion.
