Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Connecticut

Real Estate ownership

We were recently married. I sold my home and took all the money to pay off my husbands home. The home also included land he later purchased. Because my name is not on the mortage, worse case, if we ever split up or in case of death, where do I stand with ownership? He also has 3 sons.

Do I need to get a Lawyer and have my name listed on the home and land?

Re: Real Estate ownership

Keep good records. If you can show that your premarital money went into his house and land, a divorce court would probably give it back to you in a divorce. However, the appreciation in value might well not get split. Also, what if there's no divorce, but he drops dead and his will leaves everything to his sons? You don't get anything back in that case. You're much better off getting the property put in both names, and, yes, you will need a lawyer to do it.
