length of time to settle an estate

A family member passed away last year (March 07) in Connecticut. amily members have recently been contacted by an attorney who is 'settling the estate' of the deceased. What does this mean? How long will this take. The deceased left behind a widow and 'his' kids and 'her' kids from previous marriages.

Most estates settle within a year of being opened, but there could be lots of reasons for a delay. You might want to call the probate court and ask what the hold-up is. They are usually very helpful.
