Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Connecticut

unknown inheritance amount

My daughter will be receiving an inheritance from her grandfather when she turns 21. What should she be asking for in terms of documentation in order to determine what and how much she will be receiving. Her uncle is the executor and has not given her anything.

Re: unknown inheritance amount

That depends on a lot of things. If she must wait until she is 21 to get it, my guess would be that it was left to her in a will and that it's being held in trust. It could be that it was part of a living trust, and not in a will. The difference is important because the probate court would have jurisdiction over a trust created in a will, but not necessarily over a living trust. If it was subject to probate court supervision, then the trustee (the uncle) would have to supply the probate court with an accounting of where the money came from and where it went and what's left. That accounting would have to be made available to your daughter. If it is not subject to probate court supervision, it could be more difficult, but not necessarily impossible, to get such an accounting.
