Getting married

I am getting married to someone that still needs to file bankruptcy. I own my house and am worried when he files they will try to take the house cause were married. He thinks it won't affect the stuff that I had before him and I think when we get married 1/2 of all I own is his. Please help I'm getting married in 10 days. Thanx.

Re: Getting married

Keep your assets separate and do not add your name to any of his liabilities (i.e., credit cards, car loans, mortgages) until this gets cleared up. If one spouse files for bankruptcy, the other does not have to, but any joint debts would be the responsibility of the non-filing spouse. If your assets and liabilites are separate, however, you would not risk your assets or assume his liabilities when he files just because you are married.

I am on vacation until August 26. Please feel free to contact me after then. Have a great wedding!
