If an attorney takes a case on contingency can he later tell the client that he no longer will represent the client?

Look at the contract. What does the contract say about this particular situation? What explanation did the attorney give for not leaving the matter? If the attorney didn't give you an explanation, you should ask for one. Nevertheless, in general, unless it is extremely close to a hearing or trial, an attorney can leave a case.
