Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in District of Columbia

Ethical Concern of a Student/ Exotic Dancer

I am a PhD student in a clinical psychology program. I pay for school by working once a week at a small topless (w/ pasties) go-go bar. The place I work does not permit touching, does not have any type of private or semi-private dances etc. I make b/w $200-$300 a night and use this money toward school. What are my legal rights? my civil rights? I know there are high profile lawyers that put themselves through school this way, but I am unaware of any precedent for psychologists. I do not want the means to disable the end; however, I also feel strongly that my job entails nothing more than what one experiences walking down the beach in Europe (or Miami Beach) I believe the time:money ratio = THE SMARTEST way of putting yourself through school, though I understand that I may have to work with those who disagree with this view. Thank you for any information you can offer.

Re: Ethical Concern of a Student/ Exotic Dancer

You don't specify what you are concerned about. Are you asking about your rights at work? Even in an adult club, you are entiteld to be free from sexual harassment, discrimination, etc.

Are you asking about your rights at school? Schools are also subject to the same laws as everyone else. They may not discriminate against you, sexually harass you, defame you, etc.

However, schools do have wide latitude as to who they allow to be in their programs. If you are concerned that you will be expelled because of your job, you should check the school policies to see what they say about student conduct.

For example, a school with a religious background probably would frown on your activities and would be justified in expelling you. A non-religious school probably would not, unless a student's activities had some type of negative impact on the school.

In any case, I do not know exactly what your question is, so you might want to re-post with a more specific issue.

Good luck.
