Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in District of Columbia

Consequences of Defaulted Student Loans

4 part question: 1)If I've defaulted on my student loans, can the United States garnish my income in the United Kingdom? 2)If the Dept of Ed were sue me and get a judgment, having no assets, could I go to jail? 3)If a judgment is issued against me and my financial situation still doesn't allow me to pay, what will happen; and, 4) what is the worst case scenario? Thank you in advance to any/all that answer.

Re: Consequences of Defaulted Student Loans

In order for you to have your income garnished by any person or entity in the U.K., including the U.S government, for having defaulted on a student loan, a long and complicated legal process would've have had to have been gone through whereby the relevant orders, decrees or judgments which were obtained against you in the U.S were properly enrolled or registered (or whatever the correct term is) in the appropriate court(s) of the U.K., whereby these court(s) would then adopt these various U.S. court issuances as their own, and enforce them, accordingly.

It's not likely that this would happen with a

U.S. sponsored student loan.

People do not go to jail in the United States for

not being able to pay judgments obtained against them in civil court.

The answers to your other questions you should be able to figure out on your own.
