awol for 20 years and need to clear up the mess, I put myself in did'not cause any

You are no longer awol. Once you go past 30 days of AWOL, you become a deserter. Desertion is a pretty serious offense, and not one to be taken lightly. In other words, the penalties that apply to AWOL don't apply to desertion.
You need to contact a good attorney specializing in military criminal law in your area. Have that attorney broker your surrender and that should go a long way toward keeping the sanctions to a minimum.
