If so, and you are not licensed in that area, you have no legal remedies as a contractor. You can't foreclose on a lien, and you can't sue as a contractor. If you did the work, you'd be guilty of unlicensed contracting which is a felony. Whether the customer knew you were unlicensed when they hired you means nothing.
