It can be argued that the Seller abandoned the items by not taking them prior to closing. Generally, anything left after the closing is considered the property of the Buyer unless other arrangements have been made. Regardless, is it really worth fighting about? If the items are of negligible value, why not just return them and move on in life. There may be a time when you need to speak with the Seller to obtain some information about something that has broken or gone wrong in the house and you will have lost them as a valuable resource.

If your contracts don't address what is left with the property after closing, then you have to make the decision whether you want to make a problem for yourself over these items. Arguably they now belong to you, but you'll have to decide; we don't know all the facts.
