Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Law Firm declines settlement offer

A credit card was charged off at $8000 in 1998.

It was sold to another company and that collection agency sold it to another company which has now enlisted the help of a law firm. After 4 years it has accumulated to$19,000 with interest. I tracked down the law firm and offered $3000 to settle this account. I was told this wasn't enough and I needed to obtain a consolidation loan. I applied online for a small loan and was declined because of my poor credit(no surprise). What strategy should I incorporate and what can I use as leverage to settle?

I am head of household so they cannot garnish wages. I don't think they can go after any exempt property.

I don't own a house and I drive a 10 year old car.

Can they go after my wife's assets? Do I need to hide any bank accounts?
