Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Neighbor worked on house, now charging me when he said wouldn't-RUSH court 6/07

I asked a neighbor how much he would charge to fix damaged stucco on side of my house. He said he charged by the hour, but wouldn't tell me wage. He then said if I helped him, it would defray the cost-I did help. I got concerned because he talked alot & was quite slow. Then he asked me out & I said yes-then, was pleasant/interesting. We somewhat started dating. When that work was done,I asked how much I owed him-he replied ''nothing-your time & friendship is payment enough''. He said since I struggled financially & being a single mother he was glad to help me. That was 06/06 & needless to say our friendship went sour-In his mind it was a relationship-we were going to be together forever, etc. I ALWAYS told him that it's NOT a relationship, just a friendship with some benefits-he agreed. Now, 03/07 he gives me a bill for everything he's ever done for me-I ONLY asked to do the stucco, he found many things to do so he could be around me. 05/07 he serves me with mediation papers and is suing me for $2100. On 03/07-bill was for $1100 but told me then he would charge me just for the materials wich is $400. There was never a contract. Is a verbal contract valid in FL? Do I need a lawyer for this. He dated bill 06/06-gave in 03/07!
