20 year old man needs defense help- male claims to not remember incident

M (20 year old) has charges of two counts of forgery and one of grand theft, all regarding stolen checks from his grandmother. His grandmother now wants to drop the charges but is not allowed. Then he came with me down to Ft. lauderdale. He has a drug addiction (3 months out of rehab) and was using drugs the night before the crime. The next morning he took my car (being influenced by a friend in the car) he gets out and attempts to steal a purse from a 74 year old woman. She wouldn't let go and a few moments later lost hold she fell and supposedly suffered a fracture in her left arm and broken nose. As Chris got into the car and started to take off a man claims he jumped in front of the car to stop him but says Chris did not stop. The man claims to have jumped onto the car fearing his life and was smashed onto the windshield of car punching through the windshield. causing a severe laceration to his left hand requiring several stitches and surgery. He was charged with battery and s/a robbery. What should we do from here, extremely distraught and I know he should not be in prison. He is a good person with a good heart but he needs mental help and will not get it in prison. Thinking about pleading youthful offender. What should we do?
