Firearms and weapons cases are prosecuted on both the state and federal levels. There is an increased focus of the United States’ Attorney’s Office to bring federal charges in gun cases because of lengthier prison sentences. Charges brought can be in many forms, including felon-in-possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, making a false statement on a gun application, straw purchase cases, possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of a stolen firearm, and dealing in the shipment of illegal guns and weapons. Individuals often face enhancements because a weapon was brandished, or because of the type of gun or firearm used, such as the possession of an AK-47, or a semi-automatic hand-gun. These cases may involve individuals who are deemed Armed Career Criminals or Career Offenders which require the assistance of highly competent counsel.
