Legal Question in Criminal Law in Florida

My son is 18 stoled a $25 item from a retail store in florida. He has never been in trouble and he is currently attending college. At his trial date I want the court to withhold adjudification and expunge this from his record. Do I need a attorney for this and what type of cost are we looking at? Broward county florida.

Your son may be eligible for pretrial diversion which is similar to probation and upon completion of the program the charge would be dismissed. Assuming that your son has no prior convictions, he could get the arrest record expunged but this would be a separate petition. My office charges $1,000 including disbursements for that proceeding. Pleading guilty or "no contest" and getting a withold of adjudication is not as good as the benefits of the pretrial diversion program. If you need further information, contact me.
