You'll probably be offered a diversion program, which means that, if you successfully complete a short term of probation with a fine and community service, the charge gets dropped.

If they don't have the program in your county, you'll probably be offered either a fine or the same type of probation I mentioned above, but without the option of the charges being dropped in the end. Even if you get this type of sentence, the case can probably be sealed once you are finished with it.

You may be offered something called PTI (Pre-trial intervention) or PTD (pre-trial diversion.) Each jurisdiction has a different procedure. For some, you plea to the charges, and complete a short probation, after which the charges are then rescinded and dropped. In other cases, you do not have to plea to the charges, but do the probation and then the charges are dismissed. Either way, you do not have the charges on your record.
