Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

Child support jurisdiction

I was ordered to pay child support in Indiana in 1995 until child reaches age 21. Child has resided in Florida for past 12 years and I live in Alabama. Florida requires support to be paid until age 18. Which state (FL or IN) has jurisdiction now? As a sidenote, child's mother gave guardianship to his grandmother and I've paid support directly to her for past 5 years and child will be 18 soon. I'm wondering if I should pay support for 3 more years or stop payments at age 18. Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Child support jurisdiction

Indiana rules. That's where the order emanated from. If there has been no modification, the order does not change.

You have to be pro-active and, if there is good reason, then you can file to modify the order. Remember, regardless of where and with whom the child lives, the support is for the child not anyone else!
