Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

Stalking Laws

I live in Pinellas county and did not know where else to post this question. I am 36 and with a man for 1 1/2 yrs who I believe is stalking me. He was jealous and controlling but never physically lashed out at me when we dated.

I received an e-mail on Facebook interrogating me on who I am seeing. The person used a false name but used a profile pic of the red nose doberman my ex had, including the canine scar on the left ear. He wanted to let me know it's him out there watching me.

And spooky as it is I did not change the locks right away. I thoughyt I woke up with him standing in my bedroom doorway at 4 AM one night. Now I have changed my locks and set my house alarm! Because he lived with me before things ended I have little evidence.

I have contacted the police but they do not take me seriously. They stated unless a pattern of stalking is established or a document of bodily harm is done I am out of luck. Won't it be too late by then? Please advise.....

Re: Stalking Laws

Advise you as to what? You've done what you can. You've called the police, set an alarm, changed the locks. Sounds like you know how to protect yourself. Keep your camera or phone handy to photograph him if he comes around so that you can prove stalking. Florida also has a cyber-stalking statute if he stalks you online. If he threatens you, go to the courthouse and take out an injunction against him. Consider getting a weapons permit. Maybe take self defense classes. Buy a big dog. Become best friends with a Buccaneer.

You know what to do. Be careful and take care of yourself.
