Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

My step daughter moved in with my husband and me. I would like to know how I have LEGAL rights for decisions concerning medical, school, etc. Her mother said a handwritten note signed by her giving consent is sufficient. Is this true or do we need something like a power of attorney for custody of minor child? They have joint legal custody, she has just moved in with us.

A handwritten note is not likely to be sufficient. You will need a power of attorney, and really you should get a court order. Thant would be best.
