Legal Question in Family Law in Florida

student loan responsibility after divorce

I have a student loan through sallie mae and my fiance is freaking out that when we marry and ever get divorced he will be responsible for half of it. I aquired the total debt of the student loan almost 110 years ago and it has been in deferrment in and out for all those years and has reached 100,000. Would he be responsible if we got divorced.

Re: student loan responsibility after divorce

Nope. This is considered individual debt because it was incurred before the marriage. It's the flip side of property. What you owned before the marriage remains yours as well.
