"Godparent" isn't a legal thing, it's a religious thing, so a lawyer wouldn't be the right person to ask. But, to give you some insight, I'm a godparent of my friend's child because he chose me. His ex-wife chose someone else. Why don't you choose a godparent? There will be two godparents--which there is supposed to be--and the godparents won't be married--which they don't have to be. And being a godparent doesn't mean you get custody of the child if the parents die. That can only be accomplished through a will.
