Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Florida

What constitutes ''proper service''?

For the past several days, a sheriff has been trying to serve me with some papers. I just don't answer the door. Can I get into any trouble for not answering the door? Any other suggestions for avoiding ''service''? Thank you.

No, you don't have to answer the door. Sooner or later, though, you will get served. When you want an extension to answer the complaint, the answer will be "no." Under some circumstances you can be immediately liable for the cost of obtaining service.
