Is it illegal place ads for service in peoples mailboxes manually! ( door to door)

Short and sweet (or not so sweet) answer. Yes, it is a violation of federal law to place anything in or on a mailbox. Many door to door distributing companies use plastic bags with "hangers" to avoid violating the law.
