leased equipment

If a person leases equipment, and then sells the equipment but stays current with the lease and then ''buys the equipment'' at the lease's end - is this legal?

I don't see how you can sell what you don't own. But if this was a lease to own lease then look to the language of the contract to see if selling the property before the end of the lease is prohibited.
