Legal Question in Employment Law in Florida

Are they allowed to fire me

Hi, I work for Honda. Before I started there me and my wife made plans for our daughters birthday. I had told my boss and he said it was fine to take the days off all this was not in writing but since he gave me his word more plans were maid and we even have family flying in for the celebration. Then days later He will not give me the days off because 4 other people in another department are going away exactly the same week and he wants me to do the job of those other 4 workers. Now my questions are: 1) If he gave me his word and because of that plans were already made. Ex. Reservations, Flying family ect. can he denied me those days. 2) He has me working for this 4 other people a position that pays more which I won't be getting paid for plus they have me as a janitor and other things that does not involve what I was hired for. Am I in the right of saying no. Can they fire me for that? Plus I'm hispanic Minority. Thank you so much for your time.

Sincerely, Eduardo Castro

Re: Are they allowed to fire me

Eduardo:

Yes, they can legally fire you--for any reason, at any time, as that is the law in Florida, and yes, they can legally refuse your days off now. The law in Florida provides that you are employed at-will and have no expectation of continued employment. Similarly, your employer is not required by law to give time off from work, unless it is for a medical emergency or serious health condition, and then only under certain circumstances.
