i came back to work from heart surgery i told my boss about it when i was in hospital. When i came back on my first day the whole place knew about it. is this a violation of hippa law. My concern is that where i work will be closing down in a few months now potential employers may know about this if someone else works there that knows me.

It is not a violation of HIPPA because HIPPA applies to medical professionals. However, it may be a violation of your workplace privacy rights. You should look in the policies and procedures guidelines for your workplace privacy rights.
