Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

Renters rights

I moved out of my apartment 3/31/08, I lived there over 2 years and was never late with my rent and there was no damage ..my lease was up 6/6/08..the new tenant moved in to my apartment 4/12/08 and I understood that I would be responsible to pay rent from 4/1/08-4/12/08.I recieved a certified letter stating that I owe them $1152.40 (just fyi, when I moved in, they had never cleaned the apt from the last tenant so they took $50 off my rent, and I also filled out and still have a copy of the tenant moved in inspection sheet which I checked that everything was 'dirty' when moved I moved in, they did not even change the furnace filter......They are charging m e as follows $317.40 for April 1st-April 12th ,$150 for paint,$635.00 (this is amount of my monthly rent) for Misc?? states billed until the new resident starts paying? $100 for renewal special(they want that back because I broke lease 2 months early) $75 carpet clean. Can they charge me an and the new tenant for the same month?

Re: Renters rights

Once they have a new lease, your obligation to pay rent ceases. Given the time that you spent there, I also think that they cannot charge you to paint or to clean the carpets assumeing that there was just normal wear and tear (as opposed to a big spot, forinstance, that you caused). If you took pictures of the placve before you left, that will help you. A charge for "misc." is improper.
