The board of directors of your condo association has the power to set the amount of any assessment. The board has to hold a meeting to vote on the issue, and they have to list that item on agenda of the meeting beforehand. If they follow the correct procedures, they can raise the monthly maintenance fees or enact a special, one time assessment.
