If my husband and I build a rental property in my parents back yard and we want it to be separate financially, will their property taxes go up?

First, you must determine whether or not you can divide your parents property. Unless it is a metes and bounds acreage description, you probably can't. Generally, if it is located in a subdivision or platted area, you can't. Second, if you can't divide the property, then you need to determine if the zoning permits a separate rental property to be built. It probably doesn't, but if it does, then the whole parcel of land will be taxed according to it's original value, plus the value of the new structure.
