Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida

Roommate property and debt

Four months ago, our roommate informed us that he was

moving out. We agreed to that and let him keep his

owed rent for August. However, his move fell through.

We spoke to him about it and offered him a deal in

which he could pay his back rent in payments. He

agreed to that. However, he did not pay anything. He

no longer is staying at the house. We do not know his

current address. We have tried to contact him by

phone, but we have not heard from him. He has never

removed his belongings. We would like to know what

rights do we have in regards to the back rent and his

belongings. He is on the lease. We would not be

worried about the back rent, but we cannot do anything

else with that room. What would we need to do to get

the rights to that propert

Re: Roommate property and debt

You've raised a lot of questions. An

attorney would need to review your lease

agreements and obtain all the facts and

circumstances in order to get an informed

opinion. There are statutes governing

steps you need to take with regard to

disposing of someone else's abandoned

property. I strongly suggest you seek

the advice of an attorney.
