Re: forms for closing checking account of deceased mother

I have to ask a few questions before I can tell you exactly what must be done to close the account of a deceased person. If the account was held jointly with a right of survivorship then the surviving account holder may be able to walk in and close the account. In that case, the bank may, at most, ask for a death certificate. If the bank account was held only in the name of the deceased then a probate estate may have to be opened. If this was the only asset you might, depending on the size of the account, be able to use the simplified summary administration to quickly obtain a court order allowing you to close the account. You may want to consult with a probate attorney to determine your best course of action.
