Legal Question in Consumer Law in Georgia

raffle tickets

If I raffle off say my own television and some other unneeded items to make some money to send my child to camp this summer; is this legal and what are the procedures. I was told I would have to give at least 20 percent to my church. Is that right?

Re: raffle tickets

State law only allows charitable organizations to do a raffle. Try a yard sale, Craig's list, eBay or similar methods to simply sell the items.

Re: raffle tickets

I doubt the 20% donation to the church is enforceable. However, in at least some counties in GA, the sheriff must approve the raffle. In Gwinnett, e.g., they will provide you with the forms and instructions. You may find that a raffle will only be approved if it is for a charitable purpose. As an alterntive, you may want to consider a yard/garage sale. Then, you can do whatever you want with the money.
