I canceled my gold gyms contract and have been contacted saying if i dont pay the money owed i will be taken to claims court. Can I be taken to small claims court if not notified of the action or if i live out of the state that is being filed in.

The answers depend on the terms of the contract, the laws of the state whose laws apply, and the legal and factual basis for the plaintiff's claim of jurisdiction over you -- all facts we do not know. Thus, the answer is "maybe." If you owe a fee for the cancellation, work it out before it gets to that stage.
