I gave my employee discount to a member of my family, which got me fired. It was against the rules. The discount (s) were for $50. I agreed to pay that money back and signed a contract saying that I would. I am now receiving letters from the company's attorney. They are claiming "Ga code ann. 51-10-6 civil action to recover damages for ... theft of personal property" (exactly what it says). The first one was a settlement offer for $250 if paid within 30 days of receipt of the letter. Well, having lost my job, I didn't have that money. Now their second settlement offer letter has come in and it's now $625 within 20 days. Why/how are they doing this? I agreed to pay $50! I'm still out of work (3 mos now) and I'm worried that this is on my background check. Is it? I've read that if I do pay them, I go into a database stating that I've stolen from their company. On a side note, after I was fired, one of the managers went around and told other employees why I was fired. I contacted hr and they can't tell me what they've done, but they say they have handled it.
No one here knows what the contract you signed says so take than and show it to a lawyer. UIt would extremely foolish to admit to a possible crime in writing without seeing a lawyer.
