Legal Question in Medical Leave in Georgia

Take a couple days off due to dying grandfather?

Can I take 2-3 days off work ( I have 122 hours of PTO) to go back home (from Savannah , GA to Dayton, OH ) to see my grandfather one last time? (He has leukemia and maybe only has a couple more months to live)? Can I be fired for leaving for that?

If you are an at-will employee (i.e., you have no employment contract for a specified term), you can be fired for any reason or no reason at all, so long as the reason is not unlawful (such as discrimination or retaliation). However, only an extraordinarily cruel employer would terminate an employee for this reason. Why not discuss this with your supervisor and/or human resources representative and get the time off approved in advance (preferably in writing)?
