Legal Question in Employment Law in Georgia

Fired from job for missing days

I am a single mother of 4 kids. I have been fired from my job in 1/08/08 because I missed 17 days of work since June 07. I gave them a doctors note for 2 weeks of those 17 days. I was put on probation notice on 12/27 and was told that I could not miss one more day of work nor could I go to a doctors appt unless I have the approved paid time off to cover my missing time. My son got sick so I could not go to work on 1/7 so I was fired on 1/8. Is this legal? Is there anything I can do?

Re: Fired from job for missing days

Absent a contract stating otherwise, which MAY include an employee manual, employment in Georgi is "at will" and employees can be fired for any or no reason (wih very limited exceptions for discrimination). Employees have the equal right to quit at any time. Not being available for work, regardless of the excuse, is often a reason for termination (though a reason is usually not necessary).
