If the sprinkler system in the apartment above me busted and I suffered all the damange, soaked carpet and damanged items. When the incident took place, I was told that my items would be replaced. Now they are telling me that accidents happen, and they will not be replacing my items.
Is this right?

Assuming you do what all tenants should do, and that is purchase renters insurance, you have no problem. You simply file a claim and they pay it.
If you made the huge mistake of not doing that, unless they choose to pay you, you will have file a court case, sue your landlord, prove negligence, and then you might receive a recovery.
