Legal Question in Family Law in Germany

Question on German /American divorce proceddings
Please tell me what the proceedings are for a German citizen to divorce an American citizen. Both parties are residing in their seperate countries. Divorce has supposedly been filed in Germany, but has taken over 1 year now. There is a minor child involved, and lives in America with custodial parent. Also, would military status of the American have any effect on the situation?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
