Legal Question in Technology Law in Hawaii

Spreading False Rumor thru Internet

A resident of Hawaii is sending false, malicious information about my family. He obtained our list of internet contacts and pretended that he is part of the group we are associated with.

In the internet messages he has sent from his home, he spreads malicious, false information about my wife and daughter to our contacts (all over the United States)thru the Internet.

How can we stop him from continuing sending messages to our contacts? Are there any laws broken? How can I protect my family from the continuing spread of malicious and false information.

Your assistance is appreciated.

Thank you.

Re: Spreading False Rumor thru Internet

Do you know who is sending the false information about you? Do you know his email addresses?

If you know who it is, you should engage an attorney to send this person a cease and desist letter. If you don't know this person but have their email address(es), you may either want to contact the URL owners or the ISP or have an attorney do it for you. My experience, however, is that unless you actually sue the ISPs, they won't provide any information. In my opinion, based on what you have written, you may have causes of action against the sender for defamation, invasion of privacy, and false light. If they have some how "mined" your email lists, add trespass and some violations of federal law to the list.

Sorry to hear about your problem. Best of luck to you.
